Strætó, Iceland chooses Trapeze System
Icelandic transport company, Strætó, chooses IT planning and operations solution from Trapeze
Reykjavik-based transport company, Strætó, has started a thorough modernisation to make more people go by bus and leave their car at home. As part of this process, Strætó has chosen a Trapeze IT tool, and the system is to be implemented in just three months.
[Århus, Denmark, 20 February 2005] The transport company Strætó in Reykjavik aims at attracting more public transport travellers and this is a big challenge as Iceland is the country with the second-highest car per inhabitant rate in the world. Thus, public transport in Reykjavik is currently undergoing a significant development and change, and in support of this process, Strætó has chosen a planning and operations tool developed by Trapeze Group in Århus, Denmark.
“Our current planning and operations solution is not up to date and is unable to support the development of our company. We need a modern IT tool which can meet future requirements and optimise vehicles and services, giving us the flexibility necessary to adjust our offers to passenger requirements,” says Managing Director of Strætó, Ásgeir Eiríksson.
Stræto is in charge of planning and operating public transport in Reykjavik and six surrounding municipalities with 72 of their own buses, 32 leased buses and 280 employees. The passenger potential for the company is more than 180,000.
“We will introduce both an electronic payment system and modernise the entire route network. In relation to the route network, this means that the current 35 lines will be reduced to 19 of which six lines will be high-frequency main lines that to a high degree will operate on the wide boulevards where traffic runs more smoothly. This will give the general public a better service, thus making public transport more attractive,” explains Ásgeir Eiríksson.
The implementation of the Trapeze system will start in March, and the system is expected to be in full operation already when the timetable is changed on 12 June. For the actual project implementation, Strætó has appointed the experienced operations and project manager, Einar Kristjansson, who in 2001 implemented and commissioned a Trapeze operations system for a Danish bus company in just three weeks. “Implementing and commissioning both the plan and the operations package in just three months will be quite a challenge, but I know and have very good experiences with the Trapeze system. And this time, we have a bit more time than the last time I was in a similar situation”, says Einar Kristjansson.
